Iran to Export Water to Kuwait

TEHRAN Dec. 23 (Mehr News Agency) – The Cabinet of the Islamic Republic of Iran went over a project to export Iranian water to Kuwait.

Fars News Agency reported that according to the Cabinet’s ratification, the Ministry of Power is allowed to sign the agreement with Kuwaiti officials on the export of Iranian fresh water.

The Cabinet also ordered the Ministry to follow the legal process until the final ratification of the agreement.

Based on the Iran-Kuwait agreement, Iran is to supply Kuwait with 900,000 cubic meters of fresh water per day (10 cubic meters per second) from Karkheh Dam, which is located in southern oil rich province of Khuzestan, through the projected pipeline for 30 years.

A 330km pipeline is to carry the fresh water to the farthest point on the bank of the Arvand River, located in Abadan, the capital of the province, and will be extended about 210km toward the coast of Kuwait under the sea.

Iran is committed to provide Kuwait with the said amount of water and Kuwait in return has guaranteed to receive and pay for it.

Kuwait in addition has pledged to consume the imported water within the Kuwaiti territory and not to reproduce or re-export it.

However, Iran and Kuwait agreed to take into account natural conditions and observe water shortages during drought period and other emergency circumstances.
